Kany, Hatton, Mroz Earn Regular Season Awards

Aston, PA –Last week the Eastern Hockey League announced its Conference All-Stars for the 2016-17 season.  Both the North Conference and South Conference named a 1st and 2nd team based off of coaches voting in their own conference.  The Little Flyers organization would like to congratulate the three Little Flyers that received these awards, Goaltender Sam Kany, Forward Peter Hatton, and Defenseman Zikmund “Ziki” Mroz.

Sam Kany – South Conference – 1st All-Star Team

During the regular season, Kany, led the EHL in wins (21) and save percentage (.946), was second in Goals Against Average (1.32) and third in shutouts (5).  In his second season with the Little Flyers organization, the 5’10” goaltender received EHL Stars of the Week honors three times during the regular season.  “Our staff is very proud of Sam for being elected 1st Team All-Conference, he’s been a steady presence for us in net all year and made big saves when we needed him to” said Little Flyers General Manager and Head Coach Rock Russo.  As a second year player in his last year of junior hockey, it has been Kany’s development as a leader that has impressed his coach even more “He’s been a leader for us in the locker room, in the weight room and off the ice, the things you can’t teach a player.  These things have made Sam a complete player for us and we are certainly proud of him and all of his accomplishments.” Russo added.

Peter Hatton – South Conference – 2nd All-Star Team

Hatton finished the regular season tied for 5th overall in the EHL in scoring with 60 points.  The second year forward really upped his game this season to lead the league’s highest scoring and most dynamic offense with 16 goals and 44 assists while playing in all 48 games.  Hatton was dangerous on the power play all season, finishing second in the league with 21 power play assists.  “Peter did a great job of scoring for us in a number of different ways this year; he was our team leader in points throughout the year.  He came back and took over a leadership role as a co-captain of our team and continued to work on his game and develop his skill set.  I felt that Peter could have easily been a first team South Conference All-Star, with that being said it is a great honor to be named to the second team and I know Peter is using that as a little added motivation as we move on here into the finals“ Said Russo.

Zikmund “Ziki” Mroz – South Conference – 2nd All-Star Team

In his first season in the EHL, Mroz made a big impact for the Little Flyers both defensively and offensively throughout the season.  The 6’4” 215LB Czech Republic native finished his first season with the Little Flyers scoring 9 goals and adding 21 assists in 42 regular season games.  With a cannon of a slap shot from the blue line, Mroz did a lot of damage on the power play with 6 goals and 10 assists for the league’s top ranked unit.  “Congratulations to Zikmund, he has had a great year for us offensively and has been a big part of our power play.  He has done a great hob throughout the year of continuing to grow and get better each day.  AS a young player he certainly has a long way to go but his ceiling is very high.  As he continues to grow and mature I believe we will see him develop into a Division 1 caliber player” said Russo.

Joe Giacobbo – Finishes 3rd in Rookie of the Year and Goalie of the Year Voting

In his first season of junior hockey, the 18-year old Giacobbo had a great year in goal for the Little Flyers.  Giacobbo was impressive from the beginning of the year, starting his junior hockey career with two straight shutouts.  Finishing the season with a record of 18-3-1, Giacobbo led the league in shutouts (7) and Goals Against Average (1.26) while finishing second to Kany in Save Percentage (.941).  Giacobbo finished third in both Rookie of the Year and Goalie of the Year voting.  “Joe had a great year for us.  In my opinion Joe and Sam (Kany) are the best goalie combo in the league and they have been all season long.  They pushed each other and made each other better.  Joe has a really bright future ahead of him and we can’t wait to see him grow as a player” said Russo.
