Kany Commits to Trinity College

Aston, PA -- It has been a good week for Sam Kany.  Early last week Kany was named as an Eastern Hockey League South Conference First Team All-Star, then later in the day the day it was announced he had won the prestigious Goalie of the Year award in the Eastern Hockey League.  Kany was also named Second Team – All Tier 3 by Tier3juniorhockey.com.  During the regular season, Kany, led the EHL in wins (21) and save percentage (.946), was second in Goals Against Average (1.32) and third in shutouts (5).  In a two year span including the playoffs in a Little Flyers jersey Kany boasts a record of 41-12-1.

The accolades Kany has received recently are a great representation of the successes he has had, but the biggest reward was being able to announce his commitment to Trinity College, located in Hartford, CT earlier this week.  The Trinity College Bantams are proud members of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC).  Trinity has been an ice hockey power house as of late, winning the 2015 National Championship and finishing as runners up this season, losing in the National Championship final to Norwich 4-1.  “It’s an exciting day when we get the opportunity to announce a player is committing to a college with such a prestigious academic history such as Trinity College.  Trinity has also been a top flight athletic program, winning the DIII National Championship a few years ago and were national runners up this year.  Sam is going to get the opportunity to go in there and play a lot for a great program and college.  When Sam came in here last year he stressed to me the importance of going to a high academic school as well as being able to play at a very competitive level.  Trinity fits both of those bills; Sam has worked hard for those opportunities both on and off the ice.  He has been a great leader for us, he leads by example in the gym, and he does a good job speaking to some of our younger guys when they need it.  He is an extremely competitive kid and is a great teammate.  I know Trinity is not only getting a great player but a great person and on behalf of our entire organization I wish Sam the best of luck”. Said Little Flyers General Manager and Head Coach Rocky Russo.  The 5’10” Phoenix, Arizona native will head to Connecticut to begin classes in the Fall of 2017.

“I'd first like to thank my family, they have sacrificed a lot so I can follow my dream, and supported me every step of the way.  My parents have been my backbone throughout my hockey career, and I don't know where I'd be without them.  Thank You to all of my family for driving to see my games, it means the world.  I'd like to thank all of my coaches who have put in the time and effort to get me here today.  A special thank you to Coach Russo, for pushing me to another level these past two years.  These two years in Philly have been very special to me.  My time here gave me the chance to play on the same team with my childhood best friend, Braden Mitchell, in his final year of junior hockey.  I have made some great friends here, and teammates who have helped me along the way.  Thank You to the Giacobbo family and the entire Little Flyers organization for everything you’ve done for me and the team.  Lastly, I would like to say thank you to Coach Greason for giving me this great opportunity.  Trinity College is a hockey powerhouse with a winning culture every year.  Most importantly it is a fantastic academic opportunity to attend a very prestigious college.  I am excited to get on the ice with the Bantams this fall, and return to the national championship” Said Kany, earlier this week upon announcing his college decision.  As a team this season, the Little Flyers allowed a league low 1.48 Goals Against Per Game and finished as the leaders in Penalty Killing percentage at 90.3 %.  Throughout the season, Sam was named to the EHL’s Stars of the Week three times.

While the future is bright for the 2016-17 Goalie of the Year, Kany and his Little Flyers teammates have one final challenge ahead of them and reaching their ultimate goal, an EHL Playoff Championship.  Friday begins the Eastern Hockey League Finals against Mid-Atlantic Division rival, Philadelphia Jr. Flyers.  For Kany and a handful of teammates in their second year with the Little Flyers, it is a chance to avenge last year’s heartbreaking loss in the Finals to the New Hampshire Monarchs and finally bring the Eastern Hockey League Playoff Championship to the Little Flyers Organization.
