Savel Tallies 100th Career Point

Aston,PA — On Wednesday, Philadelphia Little Flyers headed 16 miles down the road for an afternoon game against Mid-Atlantic division rival Philadelphia Jr.Flyers.

Alex Henson drew his third start of the season for the Little Flyers.  Henson would have to be sharp early as the Jr.Flyers were on a 5-on-3 power play just over two minutes into the game.  Henson and the defense stood tall, killing off the penalties to keep the game scoreless.  The Little Flyers power play got a chance to put the first goal of the game on the board later in the period.  On the power play, Henson played the puck high off the glass to Avery Smith at the Jr.Flyers blue line.  Smith backhanded the puck to Matt Sheaffer who found Sasha Miniouchine in the slot, Miniouchine wound up and blasted a slap shot last the Jr.Flyers goaltender for the 1-0 lead.  The visitors took the one goal lead into the first intermission leading the Jr.Flyers in shots 14-9.

The Little Flyers offense got going in the second period.  While on the power play again, Henson caught the Jr.Flyers in the midst of a line change and sent the puck from his crease through the neutral to Joey Savel.  Savel deked the goalie who went down and slid the puck into a wide open net.  The goal was Savel’s 12th of the season.  Twenty seconds later the offense would strike again.  Cale Coor’s shot from the point was deflected to a wide open Matt Sheaffer all alone at the side of the net,  Sheaffer deposited the puck into the back of the net for a 3-0 lead 5:26 into the second.  The Jr.Flyers wouldn’t go away in this one and were able to get on the scoreboard with a power play goal of their own at the midway point of the game.  Just thirty nine seconds later, the Little Flyers would regain their three goal lead when Alex Ochterbeck got the puck to Savel in the corner.  Savel sent the puck cross ice to Eric Higgins for the one timer.  With that assist, Savel tallied his 100th career point with the Little Flyers.

The Jr.Flyers tried to cut into the lead again in the third period and had plenty of opportunities as they had three man advantage chances in the final twenty minutes of play.  With 1:09 left to play, an even strength goal by Bayley Kubara cut the Little Flyers lead to two. That would be as close as the Jr.Flyers would get as Henson held on for the 4-2 win, making 34 saves in the game.

Savel Tallies 100th Career Point

In Wednesday’s Win, Little Flyers Co-Captain Joey Savel tallied his 100th career point as a Little Flyer.  In 77 career games played, the 6ft, 185lb center from Sterling Heights, MI has amassed 28 goals and 72 assists for 100 points.  Savel played a major role offensively in last years EHL finals run with 19 points in 12 post season games.  This season Savel came back and assumed a major leadership role, being named Co-Captain alongside defenseman Trevor Lewandsoki.  Savel has posted a point in 17 of the Little Flyers 18 games this year.   His 35 points (12 Goals, 23 Assists) places him atop the leagues leaders, tied with Cullen Kane of the Connecticut RoughRiders for first place.
