(Sept 17, Jim Booth) The U16 Little Flyers started off 2019/2020 with a trip to Connecticut to play in the first NGHL Showcase Tournament of the season.  Our girls started out slow in the first game and the result was a 2-1 loss to the Ice Cats.  The girls started to gel as a team in their next outing against the Junior Canes after Morgan Daly connected with Bonnie Mundy to  get the puck to Monica Mumma who put the puck in for her first goal.  It was clear that the team will need to work on the post goal celebration skills if they want to stay healthy.  The over exuberant players were a sight to see as ended up in a pileup near the slot.  The second period saw Evelyn Hill connect with Kaila Booth for a fancy bar down goal that she later claimed to have closed her eyes during the shot.  This turned out to be an important goal as the Junior Canes were able to tie the game 2-2 late in the third period.  The next game had our girls pitted against the U17 Ironbound.  Two very evenly match teams played a scoreless first period and then early in the second Morgan Daly was able to get Emma Bessa the puck for her first goal of the season.  Ironbound was able to answer with 2 goals of their own.  Then in the third Ironbound was able to seal the game with a 3rd goal into an empty net.  The final game of the Showcase was setup seemingly by the hockey gods to give our girls a shot at redemption the next day against the U17 Ironbound.  After an entertaining night of team building at the Karaoke restaurant our girls went out U17 Ironbound with ringing ears and energy.  Evelyn Hill connected with Georgia Cronin on a breakout and she was able to put a beautiful shot passed the U17 Ironbound keeper for her first goal of the season.  Our girls kept the energy at a high level and Avari Hahn combined with Evelyn Hill to get the puck to Jenna Calchi for her first goal of the season.  That turned out to be the wining goal for our girls in a 2-1 effort.

After the game Coach Keenan commented on the team’s weekend effort, “We started out a little disheveled in game one but the girls really came together after Monica’s goal in game 2.  I don’t know if it was the extended celebration or positive vibe from the crowd but that was the turning point for the quality of team play for us.  We definitely have some items to work on but I’m really happy with how the team is progressing.  This tournament is a great showing for our first effort of the season”.  It was this sentiment that was felt by several in attendance that prompted us to name Monica Mumma as the player of the weekend.  Congratulations Monica and congratulations girls for a solid effort.
