16 National goes 2-0, Meets Great 8

Aston, PA – Little Flyers Youth Hockey Weekend Wrap Up 9/28 & 9/29 2019

18 U – The 18U Little Flyers were on the road this weekend against the Mercer Chiefs National-Elite team.  The Chiefs jumped on the scoreboard first with a power play goal at the 10:23 mark of the first period.  Under a minute into the second period, the Chiefs notched their second power play goal of the game to take a 2-0 lead.  Patrick O’Connell cut the lead to one with a shorthanded goal later in the second period.   Chris Blango and Jack Costible set up Izy Seaman for the game tying goal with four minutes left to play in the game.  Neither team was able to break the 2-2 deadlock in the final minutes of the game.  The Little Flyers out shot Mercer  31-17 in the game, Harris Brotman made 15 saves for the Little Flyers.

16 U National -   The Little Flyers 16U National team was in Washington for two games against the Little Captitals.  Michael Manzi recorded his first shutout of the season with a 20 save performance in a 2-0 win and stellar defense in front of him all game long.  Jack Ellis collected two points including the eventual game winner at the 7:41 mark of the second period with Daniel Whittock setting up the goal.  Ian Asuncion added an insurance goal later in the third period with Ellis picking up an assist on the play.

In game two, the Little Caps took a 1-0 lead in the first period but the Little Flyers answered right back with back to back shorthanded goals separated by just 1:23 of game time.  First Daniel Whittock tied the game with help from his brother Timothy, then Ryan Karback netted the second Little Flyers shorty of the game with Andrew Henry picking up the assist.  A Little Capts power play goal tied the game early in the second period, but that would be all for the Washington offense on the day as the Little Flyers scored four straight goals in the final five minutes of the second period to put the game away.  Michael Guarracino scored the go ahead goal with Henry picking up his second helper of the game.  Luke Riley’s unassisted goal thirty seconds later gave the Little Flyers a two goal cushion.  Thomas Sullivan padded the lead several minutes later on an assist from Sean Pomerantz,  Gurracino put the final touches on the game, scoring his second goal of the game in the last minute of the second period.  Matt Lynch made 22 saves in the Little Flyers victory. 

The highlight of the weekend may not have happened on the ice for the Little Flyers 16U team as prior to the game on Saturday the team ran into one of the NHL’s all-time greats Alex Ovechkin at the team facility. 

16 U American -  Saturday, the Little Flyers 16U American team visited the New Jersey Devils Youth American team.  Francis Scales scored the lone Little Flyers goal on the day, an even strength goal that was assisted by Zachary Neild.  In net for the Little Flyers, John Plumley made 36 saves and kept the Little Flyers within striking distance for most of the game but the Devils pulled away late in the second period and won by a final score of 5-1.

On Sunday, the team continued its tour of New Jersey, this time against the New Jersey Jr. Titans.  Jordan Fabian ignited the Little Flyers offense early in the first period, scoring his first goal of the season.  Fabian’s goal was assisted by Andre Amezquita and Michael Leight.  A minute later, the Devils tied the game at 1-1 but Jeremy Durr and Santino Capone connected for a quick answer to regain the Little Flyers lead.  After the Devils took their first lead of the game thanks to two quick second period goals, Fabian struck again thanks to Leight and Zachary Neild to tie the game at three apiece.  Santino Capone’s goal late in the period gave the Little Flyers the lead for good, Neild picked up his second assist of the game on the eventual game winner.  Colorado Cooper gave the Little Flyers a two goal lead early in the third period and Charlie Maratea provided the knockout punch ten minutes later to seal the Little Flyers first AYHL win of the season.  Jacob Erlich and Steven Reiss  assisted on Maratea’s goal.  In the 6-3 win, AJ Golden made 26 saves to pick up the win.

2005 -  In their only league game of the weekend, the Little Flyers 2005 team dropped a close game against the New York Saints by a final score of 5-4.  New York jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first with the two goals being separated by less than thirty seconds.  Nick Fiore’s second period goal cut into the New York lead at the 10:51 mark, Line mates Matt Kratchwell and Jack Wolf set up Fiore for the goal.  Less than a minute later Fiore returned the favor and set Wolf up for the game tying goal.  The Saints took control of the game in the first half of the third period, scoring three times in six minutes.  The Little Flyers never gave up and mounted a comeback in the final minutes of play.  Evan Rauch cut the lead to two with an even strength goal, Wolf picked up his 3rd point of the game with a primary assist, Dante Passio was credited with the secondary assist on the goal.  A minute later, Nick Dignazio got the Little Flyers to within one with the help of Joe Samango.  The Little Flyers comeback bid fell just short as they fell in the game by a final score of 5-4.  For the Little Flyers, Aries Carangi made 15 saves.

2006 -  The 2006 Little Flyers played a tough three game weekend series against the CT Jr. Whalers.  Trailing 1-0 in the first period of game one, Nathan DeLorme tied the game for the Little Flyers with an assist from Alex Fusaro.  The two teams headed into the first intermission tied at 1-1.  Alex Fusaro gave Philadelphia a lead early in the second period that was assisted by Christian Gabriel and DeLorme.  The Whalers offense were able to find the back of the net four times in the second to take a 5-2 lead into the 3rd.  Spencer Parish’s unassisted even strength goal was the only tally for the Little Flyers in the period.  Callahan Schultz and Vincent Berretta combined to make 41 saves for the Little Flyers in the game.

Two hours later, the teams met for game two where the Whalers jumped out to an early lead in the first period.  Gareth McDonald set up Spencer Parish for his second goal of the day late in the first.  Alex Fusaro cut the Whalers lead to two in the second period, scoring an unassisted goal but the Whalers offense remained hot throughout the day and wouldn’t let the Little Flyers get closer than that.  Shane Maleno scored the Little Flyers lone goal of the third period with Fusaro collecting the only assist on the goal.  Callahan Schultz made 31 saves in the game.

In Game three, Alex Losacco put the Little Flyers on the board first with an unassisted goal just 1:48 into the game.  Connecticut ended the period strong, scoring three goals in under two minutes to take a 3-1 lead into the break.  Christian Gabriel got the Little Flyers to within one off of a goal set up by Corrado Ditoro.  After Connecticut increased their lead to 5-2, Shane Maleno scored a third period goal to get back within striking distance, Daniel Brown assisted on Maleno’s goal.  Later in the period, Maleno returned the favor, setting up Brown to bring the Little Flyers to within one.  A Whalers power play goal with under two minutes to play cut the Little Flyers comeback bid short.  Vincent Berretta gave the Little Flyers a chance all game long, making 34 saves in the game.

2007 -  The Little Flyers 2007 team faced a tough Virtua Hockey National team on Saturday.  Xavier Thomas’s unassisted goal in the first period was the lone goal on the day for the Little Flyers offense.  Virtua took a 6-1 lead into the final period, and put the game out of reach with a few even strength goals to end the game.  Davis Fairbanks made 32 saves in the game for the Little Flyers.

On Sunday, the Little Flyers traveled to the New York Saints.  The Little Flyers defense and Jacob Aranda played a solid game from start to finish; Aranda finished the game with 23 saves.  The teams played a scoreless first period, New York took the lead in the second period with an even strength goal.  Xavier Thomas answered back late in the third period to tie the game at 1-1,  Marco Mazzarelli assisted on the game tying goal.  Less than a minute later, the Saints Logan Hughes scored the game winner with under two minutes left in the game to hand the Little Flyers a tough 2-1 loss.

2008 – The Little Flyers 2008 team traveled to Maryland for one game this weekend against Team Maryland’s National team.  After a back and forth scoreless first period, Paxton Hoishik opened the scoring, putting the Little Flyers up 1-0 5:54 into the second, Lucas Sutton picked up the only assist on the play.  Several minutes later Anton Stackow’s scored an unassisted goal to increase the lead to 2-0.  Stackow struck again less than a minute into the third period, netting his second goal of the game, this time it was Jackson Alcott who set up the score.  Team Maryland cut into the lead two minutes later but that’s as close as Team Maryland would get.  Page Faith made 30 saves in the game with a strong defensive effort in front of him to pick up the 3-1 over Team Maryland’s 2008 National team.
