2007 Team Falls in Championship game at Gene Harrington Cup

Aston, PA

18U (NAPHL Showcase) --  The Little Flyers 18U team traveled to Northern New Jersey for four games of North American Prospects Hockey League Showcase action.  In game one, the Little Flyers battled against the East’s first place New Jersey Titans who are coached by Little Flyers Alum Nick Skerlick.  The NAPHL’s leading scorer, Little Flyers forward Byron Hartley, opened the scoring in the game, taking a feed from Patrick O’ Connell and putting the puck in the back of the net.  The Titans answered back less than two minutes later to tie the game at 1-1.  Hartley struck again for the Little Flyers several minutes later to regain the lead for Philadelphia, David Matousek picked up the lone assist on Hartley’s second goal of the game.  A minute and a half later, the Titans once again tied the game up and the two teams finished the period tied at 2-2.  The Titans took the lead for the first time in the game four minutes into the second period.  Midway through the second, Chris Blango tied the game at 3-3 courtesy of Patrick O’Connell and Jack Costible.  Three minutes later the Titans again took a one goal lead but that was short lived as Lukas Washco netted the equalizer thirty seconds later, Jack Costible picked up the only assist on Washco’s game tying goal.  The two teams battled out the third period to remain tied to force overtime.  Just over two minutes into overtime the Titan’s Alex D’Angelo scored the game winner deep in the Little Flyers zone.  Harris Brotman made 30 saves in the overtime loss.

In game two of the day, the Little Flyers faced off against the New Hampshire Avalanche.  New Hampshire struck first, netting the game’s first goal at the 12:31 mark of the first period.  The Avalanche added to their lead midway through the second period with a power play goal.  Byron Hartley got the Little Flyers on the board several minutes later to cut the Avs lead in half, Hartley’s 20th goal of the NAPHL season was assisted by Chris Blango and Jake Moleski.  New Hampshire would regain their two goal cushion late in the second period to take a 3-1 lead into the final frame.  Hartley struck again for the Little Flyers this time on the power play to get within one, Jack Costible and Blango set up Hartley’s second goal of the game.  The Little Flyers pressured the avalanche late but could not find the game tying goal and fell by a final score of 3-2. 

On Saturday morning, the Little Flyers looked to get back in the win column against the Connecticut Chiefs.  The Chiefs came out firing, scoring a goal just 36 seconds into the game to take an early 1-0 lead.  Five minutes later, it was Hartley once again getting the Little Flyers on the scoreboard,  Braedon Dougherty and Jake Moleski assisted on the Hartley goal.  The Little Flyers offense took over in the second period, scoring three goals in a six minute span.  First, Cole Soster gave the Little Flyers their first lead of the game taking a pass from David Matousek.  Matousek got back in the box score several minutes later scoring his 14th goal of the NAPHL season to give the Little Flyers a two goal lead, Patrick O’Connell assisted on Matousek’s goal.  Rasmus Berrebbeah capped the Little Flyers scoring with his first goal of the NAPHL season, Byron Hartley picked up the only assist on Berrebbeah’s goal.  Harris Brotman and the defense took care of the rest, shutting down the Chiefs offense on their way to a 4-1 win.  Brotman made 18 saves in the game.

In the final game of the showcase, the Little Flyers battled against the Northeast Generals in a high scoring affair.  The Generals hopped out to a two goal lead, scoring goals two minutes apart mid-way through the first period.  Lukas Washco set up Koby Howat for the Little Flyers first goal of the day to cut into the Generals lead.  Northeast held a 2-1 lead heading into the second period.  Byron Hartley’s goal at the 3:57 mark of the second period tied the game with Washco picking up his second assist of the game on the goal, Jake Moleski also picked up an assist on the goal.  Moleski then gave the Little Flyers their first lead of the game with time winding down in the second period, Moleski’s goal was assisted by Conor Booth and Byron Hartley.  Five seconds after the Moleski goal, Lukas Washco doubled the Philadelphia lead with Moleski and Hartley picking up helpers on the goal.  Just thirty seconds into the third period, The Generals got to within one with a goal.  Three minutes later, David Matousek regained the Little Flyers two goal lead, the NAPHL’s league leader in assists Patrick O’Connell assisted on the Matousek goal.  Lukas Washco put the game out of reach with his second goal of the game at the 11:0 mark of the third, Chris Blango and Hartley set up the Washco goal.  Liam Gross picked up the win in net for the Little Flyers

 

16U National -  The Little Flyers 16U National team hosted the Mercer Chiefs for a pair of games on Saturday.  Game one saw the two team’s battle through a scoreless first period but Mercer took the lead 5:56 into the second.  With time winding down in the second period, Thomas Sullivan tied the game for the Little Flyers, Shane Kokoska and Nick Long assisted on the game tying goal.  The Chiefs regained the lead midway through the third period with an even strength goal.  Mercer doubled their lead with a power play goal with under five minutes left to play in the game.  The Little Flyers never gave up, as Sean Pomerantz brought the Little Flyers to within one but it was too late as the Chiefs took game one by a final score of 3-2.  Ryan Karbach had the only assist on Pomerantz’s goal.  Matt Lynch made 26 saves for the Little Flyers in the game in goal.

In game two, Wesley Sweitzer and Andrew Henry combined to set up Michael Guarracino for the first goal of the game.  Just over two minutes later, it was Henry’s turn to light the lamp as he gave the Little Flyers a two goal lead at the 10:16 mark of the first period.  CJ Scott and Luke Riley assisted on the Henry goal.  The Chiefs power play kept them in the game, scoring a goal with under two minutes left in the first period to cut the Little Flyers lead in half.  The Little Flyers remained ahead by one after the two teams traded scoring chances in the second period but no one was able to put a goal on the scoreboard.  The Chiefs power play struck again in the third period to tie the game at 2-2.  That is the way the game would end as both the Little Flyers and Chiefs picked up a point in the AYHL standings.  Michael Manzi made 25 saves in the tied game. 

The Little Flyers were back on the ice Sunday against the Chiefs but this time it was in Connecticut against the CT Chiefs.  This would be another closely contested game from the opening puck drop until the final buzzer.  Ryan Karbach gave the Little Flyers the first lead of the game just over six minutes into the game,  TJ Caputo registered the only assist on the Karbach goal.  The Little Flyers held Connecticut off of the scoreboard in the first period taking the one goal lead into the second.  With under five minutes to play in the second period, the Chiefs were able to tie the game with an even strength unassisted goal.  Goaltending took over for the rest of the game as the combination of Matt Lynch and Michael Manzi for the Little Flyers wouldn’t allow another puck past them.  The Little Flyers and Chiefs finished the game tied at 1-1.  Matt Lynch made 17 saves in 30 minutes of play and Michael Manzi collected 18 saves in 25 minutes.      

Bantam 2006 -   The Little Flyers 2006 team hosted the New Jersey Devils Youth in AYHL action on Saturday.  The Devils jumped out to an early lead, scoring three goals in the first period.  New Jersey added two more goals in the second period to stretch their lead to 5-0 heading into the final frame of the game.  Grayson Esposito got the Little Flyers on the scoreboard with a power play goal in the third period,  Esposito’s goal was assisted by Gareth McDonald and Daniel Brown.  Callahan Schultz made 28 saves for Philadelphia in goal.

Squirt 2010 -  The Little Flyers 2010 team traveled cross town to on Saturday for a game against the Philadelphia Jr. Flyers.  The Jr. flyers were able to open the scoring with an even strength unassisted goal with under five minutes to play in the first period.  The home team Jr. Flyers quickly added another goal in the opening minutes of the second period to double their lead.  Dean Devine answered back for the Little Flyers in the second period with a power play goal to cut the Jr. Flyers lead in half.  The Jr. Flyers offense took over in the third period, scoring four goals to take a decisive 6-1 win.  Noah Russo faced 40 shots in the game for the Little Flyers, making 34 saves.

PeeWee 2007 at The Gene Harrington AAA Cup Challenge

In Game one of the Gene Harrington AAA Cup Challenge, the Little Flyers battled against Voltigeurs College Bourget.  Xavier Thomas opened the scoring for the Little Flyers to put his team up 1-0 with a helper coming from Carter Short.  Jacob Aranda held Voltigeurs scoreless in the first period to maintain the 1-0 Little Flyers lead.  Midway through the second period, Voltigeurs found the game tying goal which set up a hard fought battle in the third period.  The two teams traded scoring chances to take the lead but it was Voltigeurs who eventually scored the game winner as the Little Flyers dropped game one by a final score of 2-1.  Jacob Aranda made 20 saves in the game for Philadelphia.

The Little Flyers offense woke up in game two against the Springfield Pics.  Springfield took a 1-0 lead ten minutes into the first period but that didn’t stop the Little Flyers offensive push.  Corbin Cassel tied the game for Philadelphia, taking a feed from Blake Ditalia to net the game tying goal.  Several minutes later, Sean Albert gave the Little Flyers their first lead of the game with assists going to Marco Mazzarelli and Carter Short.  Springfield quickly answered back to deadlock the game at two.  With under a minute left in the first period, Gerald DiStefano set up Carter Short to regain the Little Flyers lead.  Jacob Aranda held Springfield off the board in the third period, making save after save to protect the one goal lead.  Thaddeus Raynish sealed the win for the Little Flyers with a third period goal that was set up by Alec James.  Aranda finished the game with 15 saves.

In game three, with a trip to the Championship game on the line, Aranda led the Little Flyers with his play in net, the Little Flyers goaltender shutout the London Jr. Knights, making 11 saves in the game.  Carter Short continued his impressive weekend offensively giving the Little Flyers a first period lead thanks to a feed from Sean Albert, Short did the rest to put the Little Flyers up 1-0.  Thaddeus Raynish added to the lead in the final minutes of the first period, Bradyn Holmes assisted on the goal.  The second period saw no change in the score.  Jason Beaman sealed the win for the Little Flyers at the 9:01 mark of the third period, increasing the Little Flyers lead to 3-0 with less than five minutes of play, Blake DiTalia collected the lone assist on Beaman’s goal. 

The Championship game saw a rematch between the Little Flyers and London Jr. Knights.  This time it was the Jr. Knights pitching the shutout.  After a scoreless first period, the Jr. Knights scored two power play goals in the second period.  London added a goal early in the third period to increase their lead to 3-0.  The Little Flyers offense was unable to capitalize on scoring chances and fell to the Jr. Knights by a final score of 4-0.  Jacob Aranda made 17 saves for the Little Flyers in the Championship game.
