ASTON, Pa. -- When you take six penalties in a game, you’re asking for trouble.

When you take six penalties against the first-place New Jersey 87s, you’re gonna have a bad time.

The Philadelphia Little Flyers EHL team knows that first-hand after surrendering three power-play goals in Friday’s 5-2 loss at IceWorks Skating Complex.

Ryan Goodliffe made 17 saves on 21 shots for PLF. Kyle Patton and Connor MacDonell each found the back of the net.

New Jersey jumped to an early lead on a 5-on-3 advantage. With Ryan Clear (tripping) and Ryan Houle (boarding) in the penalty box, Matthew Bielinski got a piece of Matt Herrick's shot for a redirection that trickled past Goodliffe.

Philadelphia came back with a strong response just five minutes later. Gavin Fritch, after a clean offensive-zone entrance, cycled the puck back to the blue line for a waiting Avery Arnold, who fired a quick shot towards the goal. Patton, stationed in the high slot, was there to deflect Arnold's offering to make it a 1-1 game at 8:27.

Things remained relatively even for the rest of the first period. Goodliffe, however, was forced to come up big after Jake Frankenfield was whistled for tripping on an 87s breakaway. Dante Terramani tried to wait Goodliffe out and deked to his right but the Little Flyers' netminder managed to stick his left pad out to make the stop.

PLF then jumped out to a 2-1 lead early in the second. Ty Carter's four-minute high-sticking infraction spilled over from the first period and MacDonell made him pay. The play started with a nice breakout pass by Scott MeGraw. Aaron Catron received the puck and sped up the right wing before making a perfect centering pass to MacDonell for his first career goal with the Little Flyers.

MacDonell nearly extended Philadelphia's lead when he sent a stretch pass to Tyler Marvil for a breakaway at the end of penalty kill. Marvil's backhand deke was turned away by Matt Sayles, however.

New Jersey capitalized on a too many men on the ice PLF penalty at 7:11. Everest Schneider roofed a backhanded shot past Goodliffe to make it 2-2.

MacDonell, impressive in his debut, did his best to try to spark the Little Flyers the rest of the frame. He first led a 3-on-1 charge but Sayles was able to make a glove save. The newcomer then set up Vincent Nicosia backdoor but Sayles was there again to turn him away.

The 87s took a 3-2 lead after a bad turnover in the offensive zone. The Little Flyers just missed catching up to the 2-on-1 rush but Schneider connected with Ben Gibbons at 19:17.

The third period didn't go Philadelphia's way, either. New Jersey cashed in on a Nicosia slashing call at 8:29 for its third PPG and a turnover in the neutral zone with time dwindling led to a Nick Swain empty-netter and 5-2 final.
