BOX SCORE

ASTON, Pa -- Someone bust out the ice packs.

Friday’s meeting between the Philadelphia Little Flyers and New Jersey 87s was bound to leave behind some bumps and bruises.

Both teams brought a physical edge and the scoresheet reflects it as 14 minor penalties total were called.

It was only fitting the back-and-forth tilt ended with some late-game heroics. Elliott Schon gave Philadelphia a 3-2 overtime win with just 13 seconds remaining in its first game since Dec. 5.

PLF improved to 8-7-1 this season and currently sits in second place of the EHL Premier South Division.

Notable goals
Schon netted his first of the afternoon at the 3:15 mark of the third period. He won't get an assist on the play but Anthony Conti was instrumental in setting it up, pinching in the neutral zone and carrying the puck across New Jersey's blue line. Kelly Stroik provided some nice support and made a quick touch pass over to Patrick Price after Conti was wiped out. Price's backhanded attempt got deflected far side to a waiting Schon, who fired a laser past 87s goalie Matt Corella.

The game-winner in OT was a beauty. Angelo Carboni threw a nice open-ice check to disrupt a New Jersey 2-on-1 to send the Little Flyers on a 2-on-1 of their own. Schon flew up the far-side wing, pulled off a nice toe drag and fired an absolute snipe over the glove to send Philadelphia home with a victory.

Power play
Philadelphia capitalized on just one of its eight attempts on the power play against New Jersey.

The lone marker came at 11:55 of the first period when newcomer David McQuiston won a faceoff back to Nicholas Bouchard at the point. Bouchard looked off a defender and sent a cross-ice pass to Thomas Yocum for a one-time blast and 1-0 lead.

Penalty kill
The Little Flyers went a perfect 6 for 6 on the penalty kill.

The result? Quite a few sore bodies. PLF was getting in the way of everything New Jersey was firing towards the net.

Netminder Trey Mattern came up with a few big saves, as well. More on that below.

Goalie report
Mattern was a busy man on Friday.

The 2003 birth year had arguably his best performance of the season, making 38 saves on 40 shots.

Mattern saved his best work for the overtime period, when he stopped all five shots fired his way. And if it weren't for a 14-save showing in the third, Philadelphia wouldn't have made it to the extra frame.

Loose pucks
With an assist on the first goal, Bouchard extended his point streak to five games (4G, 7A). He is tied with 87s forward Ivan Borisov for the EHL Premier lead in points with 28. Bouchard has played three less games than Borisov, however. ... Schon has four goals in six games this season. ... PLF has the fourth-best penalty kill in the EHL Premier at 83.1 percent.

Up next
The Little Flyers don't have much time to rest. They'll host the New Jersey Renegades on Sunday, Jan. 17 at IceWorks Skating Complex. Puck drop is scheduled for 1:45 p.m.
