Aston, PA -- The Philadelphia Little Flyers, members of the Eastern Hockey League are proud to announce goaltender Joseph Henson’s NCAA D1 commitment to further his education and hockey career at Ferris State University.  Henson, a 5’11” 175LB goalie from Troy, Michigan played two seasons for the Little Flyers EHL team.  Joining the Little Flyers midway through the 2020-21 campaign, Henson posted a 4-5 record in his rookie season with a 3.42 GAA and .890 save percentage.  “We are all very happy for Joey and his family on his Division I commitment to Ferris State.  Joey trained his tail off in the offseason and came back this season ready to be the guy in the net.  The job he did for us the second half of the season is as good as I’ve seen in the EHL, going 11-2 down the stretch and leading us all the way up the standings to clinching the Southern Division.  As he went through that stretch run you could see his confidence building and it turned our team into a different animal.  This just goes to show if you consistently put in the hard work good things will happen and Joey did that” said Little Flyers Head Coach and General Manager Mark Catron.  The Ferris State University Bulldogs compete in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) and are led by Head Coach Bob Daniels who will enter his 31st season behind the bench for the Bulldogs when Henson arrives on campus in the Fall.

“I am very proud and honored to announce my commitment to play NCAA D1 College Hockey at Ferris State University. I would like to first thank my parents and the rest of my family for everything they have done for me to be successful in life as well as hockey. I also would like to thank Coach Catron and Anthony Lorusso for giving me the opportunity to play junior hockey and pushing me every day to be the best hockey player I can be. To my teammates, thank you for making my time in Philadelphia so special and the friendships I will have for the rest of my life. Thank you to coach Daniels and his staff for this great opportunity to be a Ferris State Bulldog” said Henson upon making his commitment official Wednesday.

In the 2021-22 season, Henson was amongst the EHL’s league leaders in all statistical categories in the regular season.  He ranked 2nd in wins with 22, 3rd in saves with 944, 5th in Goals Against Average 2.18, and 6th in save percentage .922.  As mentioned by Coach Catron, Henson was locked in down the stretch for his Little Flyers, winning 7 straight games to end the regular season and clinch the #1 seed in the Southern Division on the last day of the regular season.  This carried over into the playoffs where the Little Flyers swept longtime South Division foe Team Maryland in the first round of the playoffs, Henson posted two wins, a 2.00 GAA and .941 save percentage in the series.  Henson led the Little Flyers to a Frozen Finals birth with his spectacular play in the South Division Championship series against the New Jersey 87s.  Sweeping their rivals in two games, Henson was stingy in the series, allowing three goals on 71 shots to punch the Little Flyers ticket to Providence.  Henson becomes the 11th Little Flyer to make an NCAA commitment this season.

On behalf of the entire Philadelphia Little Flyers Organization, we would like to congratulate Joey and his family on Joey’s NCAA commitment to Ferris State University and thank him for his outstanding leadership and contributions both on and off the ice to the Philadelphia Little Flyers Organization.
