BULLS NAME MIKE DAVIS CAPTAIN

AMARILLO, TX – Learning from the best before him…

That’s what forward Mike Davis says he’s done to prepare himself for the new role as Captain of the Amarillo Bulls. The Coaching staff made that announcement on Monday night.  Davis, who is in his third year with the Bulls, follows Derek Hills, Matt Johnson, Joe Kozlak, and most recently John Rey as previous players to wear the ‘C’ on their jersey. Defensemen Joe Grabowski, Brendan Vetter and forward Matt Sieckhaus will remain as Alternate Captains.

“It’s pretty exciting to be included along with those other guys who were captain before me,” said Davis. “(Joe) Kozlak did whatever it took to win, and Johnson knew how to keep everyone in check by calming us down. I grew up playing hockey with John Rey (Former Little Flyers) , so I knew exactly what to expect. It was an honor to play for him last year.”

Davis, a native of Newark Delaware, is the second Little Flyer to be named Captain of the Bulls. Davis is third on the team in scoring with 9 goals and 21 assists for 30 points in 28 games. He’s plus 11 with three power play goals and 62 shots on goal.

Bulls Head Coach Dennis Williams said it was important for the team to have once voice in the locker room.

“Mike has been a staple for us this season who does whatever it takes to win,” said Williams. “He has a lot of respect from us as a coaching staff and we feel very comfortable with the decision. He’s our longest tenured player who’s a proven winner.

“Outside of his goal scoring and point production, you can’t find a player that I think competes harder and does whatever it takes. We need more guys on this team to do that.”

In 2011-2012 rookie season with the Bulls, Davis notched 10 goals and added 13 assists for 23 points in 33 games. During the Robertson Cup Championship season, Davis was averaging nearly a point a game, and at the end leading the team in scoring with 28 goals and 31 assists for 59 points. He was also plus 48, and fired five power play goals to go along with four game winners.

Davis said it took him a while to get adjusted to Bulls hockey when he first arrived in the Texas Panhandle. 

 “What I learned in my two years here in Amarillo is all about working hard,” said Davis. “It took me until after Christmas in my first year to get adjusted to learn what I needed to. I went home during the summer and worked out hard and came back, had a great year and put everything together.”

Williams said Davis leads by example, and that other players respect because of what he has been able to accomplish in junior hockey.

“He’s a good role model for our young guys to follow,” he said.  He’s tough to play against, but with that he’s got a good offensive side to his game. Mike is not afraid to go into the corner against a guy 6-4 and protect the puck.”
