FLORHAM PARK, NJ – The Metropolitan Junior Hockey League is pleased to announce its first “Three Stars of the Week” of the 2014-15 season. This week, the award is for the period ending September 28, 2014. The three stars program is a weekly award given to the top performers in MJHL games, regardless of position, for the previous week. The awards assist in determining top performers for the year-end awards.
This week the goaltenders have it as Boston Junior Rangers goaltender Ryan Spencer (’97 birth year/Lunenberg, Mass.) is the league’s 1st Star, Philadelphia Little Flyers goaltender Joseph Giacobbo (’98 birth year/Deptford, N.J.) is the league’s 2nd Star and New Jersey Renegades goaltender John Hagan (’95 birth year/Mentor, Ohio) is the league’s 3rd Star.
Spencer picks up the first star this week after a pair of thirty-plus save performances in wins over the Northern Cyclones and the New England Wolves for his first two wins of the year.
“Ryan is a good young goalie that has a lot of potential,” said Junior Rangers Head Coach Rich DeCaprio. “He's mature emotionally for his age and has been able to make the big saves when needed. I think he could emerge as one of the top goalies in the MJHL.”
Giacobbo made fifty-four saves in a pair of Little Flyer victories over the Central Penn Panthers and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights. Giacobbo even added a rarity for a goaltender – a power play assist in the victory over Central Penn.
“Joe has been a very good addition to the junior team being a '98 birth year,” said Little Flyers Assistant Coach John Giacobbo. “He has stepped in when called upon and made the big saves. On Sunday, he even chipped in with an assist in the win.”
Picking up the third star is Hagan, a rookie goaltender for Head Coach Peter Rossi and the Renegades. Hagan made thirty-four saves, including twenty in the second period alone, in the Renegades 6-2 victory over 2014 Keegan Cup Finalist, the North Jersey Avalanche.
“The only goals [Hagan] allowed were both on 5-on-3 Avalanche power plays,” said Renegades Assistant Coach and President Cliff Graziano. “Other than those two goals, he completely shut the door on them.”
Founded by former New York Rangers General Manager Emile Francis and now entering its 49th year of existence, making it the longest USA Hockey-sanctioned Junior hockey league in the United States, the Metropolitan Junior Hockey League (MET League) has a membership of 23 teams spread across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions and prides itself on player development for athletes ages 16-20 who aspire to reach higher levels of junior, collegiate and professional hockey.
