4 games in 5 days help Little Flyers win Division

The Little Flyers have had a busy week, playing 4 games in 5 days, including 3 at the EHL Showcase in Walpole, MA. With Games against the Boston Jr Rangers, Northern Cyclones and Walpole Express on the schedule the weekend was certainly a test against some very quality competition.

First up on the brutal schedule was the Jr Rangers. The Little Flyers wasted no time jumping on the Jr Rangers as Cam Berry picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and streaked down the wing. With his feet moving he fired the puck shortside over the goaltenders glove to give the Little Flyers a 1-0 lead. Troy Grahl extended the lead to 2-0 about 3 minutes later on a nifty pass from Zach Felser. Grahl found the net again late in the period to make the score 3-0. Phil Zbell and Nick Skerlick were credited with assists on the goal. Gabe Chuckran rounded out the scoring on assists from Drew Gannon and Blake Delisle. Greg Procopio registered a shutout stopping 10 of 10 shots in the 4-0 victory.

Next up on the schedule was a rematch with the Northern Cyclones, who defeated the Little Flyers earlier in the season. The Little Flyers carried the play for the majority of the 1st half but couldn’t find the back of the net. The Little Flyers outshot the Cyclones 17-11 with the score remaining 0-0. The Cyclones took advantage of a questionable call to start the 2nd half and made the score 1-0 with a powerplay goal. Just 5 minutes later the Cyclones capitalized on a Little Flyer turnover and made it 2-0. With their backs against the wall the Little Flyers powered back. John Nugent cut the lead in half about 2 minutes later on an assist from Jesse Macintyre. A few minutes later Garrett Gallagher tied the score at 2 on powerplay blast from the point. Cam Berry and Nugent got assists on the tying goal. The Little Flyers kept the foot on the pedal and with 8 minutes remaining in the game Zach Felser found the back of the net to take a 3-2 lead. Berry and Nugent were credited with assists on the go ahead goal. Cam Berry put the finishing touches on the comeback win with the empty net goal on assists from Felser and Kelly. Trevor Micucci earned the win in net stopping 18 of 20 shots.

The 3rd game in 3 days was a battle against the Walpole Express. Walpole got on the board first to take an early 1-0 lead. Austin Kelly tied it up on a great finish on the back door as Felser and Berry made great passes to get the puck to Kelly. Oleg Potemkin found the back of the net to take a 2-1 lead. Macintyre and Gallagher got assists on the goal. Walpole kept the pressure up and late in the game managed to tie the game at 2. A minute into the OT period Gabe Chuckran was whistled on a weak hooking call to give Walpole the 4 on 3 advantage. The Little Flyers managed to kill the penalty off but before they could get Chuckran out of the box the Express found the back of the net and claimed the extra point. Greg Procopio took the OT loss stopping 34 of 37 shots.

After a day off to recuperate the Little Flyers got back to action at home on Wednesday against South Division Rival Philadelphia Revolution. The Little Flyers carried the pace but weren’t able to find the back of the net in the 1st period as the Rev goalie was able to stop all 16 shots he faced. The 2nd period the Little Flyers were able to open it up. Nick Skerlick scored his 1st goal as a Little Flyer on assists from Jake Paluch and Phil Zbell. Paluch extended the league on assists from Troy Grahl and Drew Gannon. Gabe Chuckran scored a few minutes later on the Powerplay to make it 3-0. Nugent and Potemkin were credited with assists on the marker. Austin Kelly scored a powerplay goal of his own on assists from Gannon and Berry and the route was on. With the score 4-0 heading into the final period Pavel Mikhasenok scored to make it 5-0 on assists from Hector Majul and Gannon. Kelly rounded out the scoring with his 2nd goal of the game to make it 6-0. Felser and Berry were credited with assists on the 6th goal of the game. Trevor Micucci stopped all 17 shots he faced to claim his EHL leading 17th win of the season.  With the Win the Little Flyers claimed their 2nd consecutive EHL South Division Title.
