Lethal Little Flyer Powerplay Goes 8 for 20 in the 3 Games.

The Little Flyers entered the South Division Showcase with a record of 6-4, and looking to bounce back after a tough 1-2 weekend. Facing off first against the NJ Rockets, who entered the game with a 7-4-1 record, the Little Flyers knew they were in for a tough battle. With that being said it didn’t take long for the Little Flyers to get on the scoreboard. Austin Kelly took a pass from Braden Mitchell on the PP and fired the puck low at the far post. Tim Higginbotham redirected the shot and gave the Little Flyers a 1-0 lead on his 7th goal of the season. The Little Flyers took advantage of another powerplay and extended the lead to 2-0 as Braden Mitchell received a great feed from Phil Zbell and beat the Rocket Goaltender from point blank range for his 2nd goal in 3 games. Oleg Potemkin also registered an assist on the marker. Less than 2 minutes later Jamie Bucell took a great cross ice breakaway pass from Linder Kenyon and beat the defenseman wide and entered the zone on a breakaway against the Rocket goaltender. Bucell faked shot and pulled the puck to his backhand and roofed it for his 1st goal of the season. Trevor Lewandoski also assisted on the goal. It took 6 more minutes for the Little Flyers to strike again. Chris Best picked up the puck in the defensive zone and hit Zbell with an outlet pass. Zbell chipped the puck off the board and Potemkin picked it up in full stride behind the defenseman. Potemkin carried the puck into the zone and dropped a pass through his legs for Zbell, who all in one motion skated into the puck and snapped it past the goaltender for his 1st goal of the season, to make it a 4-0 lead for the Little Flyers. The Little Flyers scored again just over 3 minutes into the 2nd period. Mitch Ossowski chipped the puck behind the Defenseman to Pavel Mikhasenok. Mikhasenok picked up the pick and flew down the wing against the defensemen. Bruce Stachitas jumped up into the play from his defensive position and collected a pass from Mikhasenok as he crossed the offensive blueline. In full stride he fired the puck past the Rocket goaltender to extend the Little Flyers commanding lead to 5. The Little Flyers found themselves in penalty trouble the rest of the period and surrendered a powerplay goal to the Rockets at the 8:50 mark of the 2nd. Mitchell netted his second powerplay goal of the game at the 17:31 mark off assists from Ossowski and Pietrowski to make the score 6-1. The Rockets found the back of the net a minute later, again on the Powerplay, to go into the intermission with a 6-2 Little Flyer advantage.  The Rockets cut the lead to 6-3 with a shorthanded goal after a Little Flyer turnover, However Tim Higginbotham equaled that marker with his second goal of the game to make the final score 7-3. Brock Thompson earned his 2nd win of the year in the net, stopping 28 of 31 shots.

Saturday the Little Flyers returned to the home of the Jr Flyers to square off against the NY Bobcats, who were coming off a big 6-4 win over the host Jr Flyers. Christian Karbler started the scoring off early for the Little Flyers, stealing a d to d pass and beating the goalie with a backhand for his 1st goal of the season. The Little Flyers Powerplay continued to click as Mitch Ossowski found the back of the net on passes from Mikhasenok and Stachitas at the 7:46 mark. Karbler finished the first period scoring on assists from Higginbotham and Peter Hatton. Oleg Potemkin scored the lone goal in the 2nd period on a breakaway to make the score 4-0. Austin Kelly and Zbell received assists on the goal. Peter Hatton found the back of the net on the Powerplay just under 7 minutes into the 3rd period for his 1st goal of the season. Ossowski and Mikhasenok assisted on the goal. The Bobcats spoiled the shutout for Little Flyers Goaltender Sam Kany, who stopped 25 of 26 shots for his 4th win of the year.

Sunday the opponent was NY Applecore, who had suffered a tough 3-1 defeat at the Hands of the Jr Flyers the day before. The Little Flyers came out flying, looking to put an exclamation point on a great weekend. They threw puck after puck at the net but Applecore goaltender Tim Sestak was up to the task. Finally Ossowski managed to find the back of the net, taking a pass from Mikhasenok and beating Sestak on the odd man rush. Tyler Pietrowski also received an assist on the goal. The Little Flyers continued to pepper Sestak with shots with no success. Finally with only 3 minutes to go in the 2nd period Pietrowski carried the puck into the zone and beat Sestak with a quick rap around goal. Lewandoski and Mitchell registered assists on Pietrowski’s 4th goal of the season. Just 45 seconds later Phil Zbell buried the puck past Sestak to extend the lead to 3-0. Kelly and Potemkin assisted on his 2nd goal of the season. The Little Flyer Powerplay got back to work in the 3rd period. Just :56 seconds into the 3rd Pavel Mikhasenok buried a back door pass from Peter Hatton to make the score 4-0. Pietrowski also assisted on the Powerplay goal. 5 minutes later Tim Higginbotham found the back of the net on the powerplay again as he tipped in a slapshot from Braden Mitchell to extend the lead to 5. Zbell also assisted on the goal. Mikhasenok finished off the scoring with his 6th goal of the season on assists from Ossowski and Pietrowski. Mikhasenok now has 6 goals and 16 assists for 22 points in only 13 games. That is good for 1st on the Little Flyers roster and tied for 4th in the EHL. Mitch Ossowski has 12 goals in just 11 games, putting him 1 behind league leader Anthony Del Gaizo, who has 13 in 15 games played. Brock Thompson earned his 3rd win of the year in the net and his first shutout of the season. The Little Flyers outshot Applecore 52-21 for the day.
