Little Flyers Sweep Cross Town Rival Jr Flyers

Now 1 Point Away from 3rd Consecutive South Division Title

The Philadelphia Little Flyers had a big home and home series this past weekend against the Cross Town Rival Jr Flyers. Game 1 was played at Aston IceWorks, home of the Little Flyers. The game was a tightly contested affair, as are most all of the rivalry games between the two teams. The Little Flyers got on the board first as Ian Socrates took a pass from Chad Watt and found the back of the net for his first goal of the season. The Jr Flyers quickly tied the game at 1 just over a minute later on the powerplay. With under a minute left in the period the Jr Flyers took the lead on their 2nd powerplay goal of the game to enter the first intermission with a 2-1 lead. In the 2nd period the Little Flyers tied the game early on as Oleg Potemkin beat the D around the edge and snapped the puck past Jr Flyer goaltender George Blinick. Phil Zbell and Chris Best picked up assists on the even strength goal. 10 minutes later Peter Hatton gave the Little Flyers the lead as he one timed a pass from Mitch Ossowski into the net to give the Little Flyers the 3-2 advantage. With less than 10 sec remaining in the Period the Little Flyers turned the puck over and the Jr Flyers took advantage, scoring the shorthanded tally to not the game at 3 going into the 3rd. The final period was a back and forth affair as both teams got opportunities to take the lead but couldn’t get it done. At the 16:34 mark the Jr Flyers took a minor penalty and the Little Flyers wasted little time taking advantage of the situation as Austin Kelly tipped in a point shot from newly acquired Defenseman Adem Arifi. Tim Higginbotham also assisted on the game winning goal. Sam Kany stopped 31 of 34 shots on net to earn his 13th win of the season.

Sunday was the 4th and final matchup between the two teams at IceLine as the Little Flyers creep closer to wrapping up their 3rd consecutive South Division Title. Potemkin put the Little Flyers on the board with a powerplay goal just 4 minutes into the game. Arifi and Zbell assisted on the goal. The Little Flyers found the back of the net 2 more times in the 2nd period. First at the 3:06 mark as Will Vanderveen beat the goaltender shortside on an assist from Tyler Pietrowski. Austin Kelly then took a great stretch pass from Arifi and extended the lead to 3-0. The Jr Flyers spoiled the shutout a minute into the 3rd but that was as close as it would get as the Little Flyers claimed the 3-1 victory and the season sweep against their crosstown rivals. Brock Thompson stopped 40 of 41 shots on net to claim his 14th victory of the season.

The Little Flyers are now 30-8 on the season and lead the EHL with 60 points. Next up on the schedule is an away matchup vs the NJ Rockets. The Little Flyers need 1 more point to clinch the South Division for a 3rd consecutive year.
