Aston, PA —. Saturday afternoon, the Little Flyers EHL team faced off against the New England Wolves in the two teams second match up of the season.  The Goaltending battle featured Brendahn Brawley for the Little Flyers and Chris Mattone for the Wolves.

The two teams exchanged scoring chances back and forth in the first period but Brawley and Mattone kept the game scoreless through the first twenty minutes of play.  The Little Flyers out shot New England 14-10 in the first period.  The Little Flyers took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play opportunity midway through the second period to open the scoring.  With the puck in the Wolves zone, Joey Savel sent the puck cross ice to Grant Rinke who fired a wrist shot high blocker side past Mattone.  Philadelphia’s Ziki Mroz also picked up an assist on the play.  Three minutes later, the Wolves answered back with a power play goal of their own to tie the game at 1-1.  In the closing minutes of the second period, the Wolves power play struck again, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead heading into the third period.

The Little Flyers found themselves back on the power play 1:26 into the the third period with a chance to tie the game.  Defenseman Ziki Mroz made a good play at the blue line on a Wolves clearing attempt to keep the puck in the offensive zone.  Mroz carried the puck down the boards and shot a wrister past Mattone to tie the game at 2-2.  The goal was Mroz’s 4th of the season.  There were eight minor penalties called in the third period, giving each team numerous chances to take the lead but neither could break the 2-2 tie.  The Wolves held the edge going to Overtime as they had 1:38 of power play time carry over from the third period.  The Little Flyers successfully killed off the penalty but in the seconds after the man advantage expired the Wolves moved into the Philadelphia zone on a 3-on-2.  Wolves forward Aleck Forcier entered the zone, cut to the slot and put a shot over Brawley’s shoulder for the game winning goal.

On Sunday, the Little Flyers were back in action, this time against the North Conference’s Vermont Lumberjacks.  Reigning EHL TSR Hockey Goaltender of the Month, Alex Henson was in net for the Little Flyers opposed by Chris Stangarone for the Lumberjacks.  Henson was tested early, as the Little Flyers were shorthanded just 1:09 into game.  Philadelphia’s penalty killing units were up to the task, keeping the game scoreless.  Midway through the period, defense led to offense for the home team as Matt Sheaffer blocked a Lumberjacks shot from the point and sped to center ice to gain possession of the puck.  All alone with Stangarone, Sheaffer made a deke and backhanded the puck into the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead.  Sheaffer’s breakaway goal would be the only scoring of the period as the Little Flyers held a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission.

Philadelphia had the chance to extend the lead early in the second period when a penalty shot was awarded due to a Lumberjacks player intentionally knocking the net off its pegs.  Stangarone stopped the penalty shot to keep his teams deficit at one.  The Little Flyers returned to the power play with less than two minutes left in the second period and it took just six seconds to double their lead.  Nate Mickey won the face off cleanly back to Nick Magill-Diaz who sent the puck across to defensive partner Brendan Coughlin.  Coughlin, hit Ryan Galvin with a perfect cross ice pass at the side of the Lumberjacks net.  Galvin, gathered the puck and buried it in the back of the net to go up by two.

Vermont answered back quickly in the third, scoring a power play goal of their own just :55 into the period to cut Philadelphia’s lead back to one.  Henson helped to keep the Little Flyers lead, turning away eight Lumberjacks shots in the third period.  A Vermont roughing penalty with just over a minute remaining kept the puck in the Lumberjacks end, preventing them from getting Stangarone to the bench in favor of an extra attacker in hopes of tying the game.  The Little Flyers put the game out of reach with eleven second left when Grant Rinke hammered a one timer past Stangarone courtesy of a Nate Mickey pass.  The Little Flyers took this one by a final score of 3-1.  With the 28 save win, Henson improved to 10-1 on the season.
